"How much do I need per month to live in Abu Dhabi?" is one of the first questions people ask before relocating. In a recent video I gave one scenario: about AED 15,000–17,000 a month for a comfortable life in a one-bedroom apartment, including a driver but without a live-in housekeeper. Here is that scenario broken down, plus two others.

The original scenario: one person, comfortable

ItemAED per month
Rent, one-bedroom on the islands (scenario)~8,000
Groceries and household1,500–2,500
Utilities and internet (incl. AC in summer)~1,500
Weekly cleaner (hourly service)~500
Driver~4,500
Total~16,000–17,000

Without the driver — most people drive or use taxis — the same life costs closer to AED 11,500–12,500 plus transport.

A couple, no children

ItemAED per month
Rent, two-bedroom (scenario)10,000–13,000
Groceries and household2,500–3,500
Utilities and internet1,500–2,000
Car costs (fuel, insurance, parking, servicing) or taxis1,500–2,500
Eating out and leisure2,000–4,000
Weekly cleaner~500
Total~18,000–25,000

A family with two children

ItemAED per month
Rent, three-bedroom apartment or townhouse (scenario)14,000–20,000
Groceries and household3,500–5,000
Utilities and internet2,000–3,000
Car costs2,000–3,000
Housekeeper (live-in, from)3,500+
Activities and leisure2,000–4,000
Subtotal before schools~27,000–38,000

The costs people forget

Schools. For many families the single largest cost after rent. Annual fees at international schools vary widely by school and grade. Spread over twelve months, two children can add thousands to tens of thousands of dirhams a month. Get fee schedules from the specific schools you are considering.

Health insurance. Employers in Abu Dhabi are generally required to provide cover for employees; cover for dependants depends on your contract. Check what is included, and budget for top-ups.

Move-in costs. In the first month, expect a security deposit, an agency fee, sometimes several rent cheques up front, utility connection deposits, and furniture. In Abu Dhabi a municipality housing fee linked to annual rent is also added to utility bills for most tenants.

Housekeeper costs beyond salary. Sponsoring a live-in housekeeper involves visa, medical, insurance and accommodation costs on top of monthly pay.

Summer. Air conditioning drives up utility bills from June to September.

How to make the budget real

  1. Shortlist two or three buildings and get actual rents and service details.
  2. Ask the schools for this year's fee schedule.
  3. Check your employment package: housing allowance, school allowance, insurance for family.
  4. Add 10% contingency for the first year.

My take

Abu Dhabi is not cheap, but it is predictable, and the absence of income tax means a professional salary often goes further than at home. The biggest swing factors are where you live and whether you pay school fees. Decide those two, and the rest of the budget is easy. If you are choosing an area to rent in, our guide to choosing an Abu Dhabi district helps narrow the search.
