I have been preparing a short series about Abu Dhabi seen from a helicopter. Rather than ten thin pages, here is one guide with ten sections — the places that, from the air, explain how the city is built.

A practical note first. Helicopter tours depend on weather, air traffic and permissions, and routes vary by operator. Not every place below will be visible on every flight; some are best seen from the ground. Ask the operator which landmarks their route covers.

1. Louvre Abu Dhabi

From above, the Louvre is a vast shallow dome resting over a cluster of white galleries at the water's edge on Saadiyat. Jean Nouvel designed the dome as layers of geometric latticework; inside, sunlight falls through it in moving patterns that the museum describes as a "rain of light". The museum opened in 2017 and anchors the Saadiyat Cultural District.

2. Hudayriyat Island

A sports and leisure island just off the main island, with cycling and running tracks, beaches, event spaces and new residential communities taking shape. From the air you can see how much of it is still being built — which is exactly why I treat it as a long-horizon market.

3. Capital Gate

The tower near the exhibition centre that looks as if it is falling over. Capital Gate leans 18 degrees, and it was recognised by Guinness World Records as the world's furthest-leaning man-made tower. From above, the lean is even more striking than from the road.

4. Qasr Al Watan

A working presidential palace complex that opened to the public in 2019. Its great white dome and long symmetrical wings are clearest from the air. Inside, the library and the Great Hall are worth a visit on the ground.

5. Emirates Palace

At the western end of the Corniche, Emirates Palace sits within extensive gardens with its own beach and a long private shoreline. From above, the scale of the grounds is what surprises people — the hotel is only part of what you see.

6. Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque

The mosque's 82 white domes and four minarets are among the most recognisable sights in the country. It is also the resting place of Sheikh Zayed, the founder of the UAE. It welcomes visitors outside prayer times, with a dress code. From the air, at sunset, it is unforgettable.

7. Nurai Island

A small private island off Saadiyat with a resort and villas, ringed by white beaches and shallow turquoise water. From above it shows how Abu Dhabi uses its many small islands for exclusive, low-density development.

8. The Corniche

The long, landscaped waterfront of the main island: beaches, cycle paths, parks and a line of towers behind. From the air you can read the city's original planned grid running back from it.

9. The city from the sea and the islands

The most useful view for anyone thinking about living here is the wide one: the main island, Al Reem and Al Maryah with ADGM, Saadiyat to the north-east, Yas towards the airport, and the bridges linking them. It shows why "Abu Dhabi" is really a set of islands with different characters.

10. Surf Abu Dhabi

A surf park on Hudayriyat Island with a large artificial wave pool built with wave technology associated with Kelly Slater. From the air the long rectangular pool is easy to spot — a reminder of how far Abu Dhabi has gone in building leisure from scratch.

My take

Seeing Abu Dhabi from above changes how people think about choosing a home. You understand that the islands are separate worlds, joined by bridges, each with its own pace. If that view makes you curious about which island would suit you, our comparison of five Abu Dhabi islands is the natural next step — and for the story of how the city got here, read from gazelles to global capital.
